Bookbinding, week 10

Below is a photograph of the tray and the lid of the box, now covered and lined. When the lining is glued in it needs to be weighted or pressed to ensure it ends up completely flat. What I forgot to photograph was the other side, which is currently uncovered. A case will cover the other side and connect both pieces.

The first step is to cut a scrap piece of board and cover one side of it with two layers of the book cloth being used for the binding. This will be used to mark out a space later on.

Now cut two pieces of board slightly bigger than the lid of the box.

Sandwich the box between the boards and measure from one side of the stack to the other.

A piece of board this wide, (and as long as the two boards), should be cut. This will be the spine of the case.

Glue the three new pieces of board to some book cloth, using the marker piece to space them out.

Fold the cloth over the edges of the boards, pressing it into the gaps between the boards.

Cover the spine with another rectangle of cloth. Again press the cloth into the gaps between the boards.

The central sections of the large boards will also need to be filled in roughly. These sides will be glued to the outside of the tray and the lid and the whole thing will be pressed. The box is almost finished!
